Sometimes in pain management, you find out a patient has passed away… not from a phone call, but from that quiet “no-show” on your schedule. You pause—because you already knew they’d been declining. And as much as it hurts, there’s a small sense of peace knowing they’re no longer in pain. Still, it’s hard. You think back on the years of visits, the stories, the little victories you shared. You got to know them not just as a patient, but as a person. That’s one of the hardest parts of this work.
